(Event) Welcoming the season of giving with The Body Shop School Project!

Ho Ho Ho, Have you been nice or naughty this year?

It’s appropriately less than 70 days to Christmas and Christmas are often associate with Santa Claus, X’mas decoration, gift giving and spending time with your love ones.. But do you know what’s the true meaning behind Christmas?

In the bible there’s this verse: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him – John 3:16-17 (NIV)

The celebration of Christmas is to commemorate God’s love for us by coming down to the earth as our Savior. Out of gratitude for what he has done, we remember his birth by gift-giving, spending time with love ones, worshipping him and spreading love and blessings to the less fortunate.

This Christmas, The Body Shop Foundation will contribute S$ 400,000 from gift sales to build 5 schools for kids with little access to education. Last week, I was invited to The Body Shop School Project‏ to find out more about the community and how i can be part of this cause.

Event was held @ Skyve Wine Bistro

For over 20 years, The Body Shop (TBS) has been actively supporting education through the Community Fair Trade programme. As part of the programme, TBS has helped communities worldwide by giving their children a better future by lending a helping hand in the investment of school building and provision of teaching materials.

The Body Shop aim for this christmas would be to be more committed to education cause by helping to build five schools around the world in areas where TBS has Community Fair Trade partners. £200,000 (approximately S$395,215) from the sales of TBS Christmas gifts will be dedicated to achieve this goal.

We can play a part to give joy by buying a gift from The Body Shop. For every purchase, you will be helping to give the greatest gift of all to children in communities in Ghana, Honduras, Nepal and Northern and Southern India.

This year’s star Christmas Gift Set – The Gingerbread School House was designed and handmade by the artisans at Get Paper Industries, a traditional  handmade paper products co-operative based in Kathmandu,  Nepal.  This gift embodies TBS Christmas project and is symbolic of how the Community Fair Trade is helping to give children a brighter future.

The Body Shop making a difference in Nepal with Get Paper Industries

This Christmas – Help give the joy of education to children living in the foothills of the Himalayas.

Get Paper Industries has been supplying TBS with handmade paper gift bags and boxes since 1989. Through long-term trade with The Body Shop, Get Paper Industries has been providing employment for up to 700 women and also help to provide education for both genders (approximately 60% of girls receive little or no education). The Anita Milan Academy was one of the first schools to be built-in and around the Kathmandu area through the support of Get Paper Industries. With your support this year, they want to build a new high school to educate children between the ages of 16-18 years.

The Body Shop making a difference in Southern India with Teddy Exports

This Christmas – Help build a special needs school for TBS very first Community Fair Trade supplier.

Based in Tamil Nadu, Teddy Exports was TBS very first Community Fair Trade supplier. Since 1987 they have been producing and supplying its wooden massagers, accessories and cosmetics bags.TBS’s Community Fair Trade partnership helps give secure employment (with equal pay and good working conditions) to over 400 skilled workers from 61 villages. There’s no discrimination on the basis of sex, religion, caste, disability or HIV status.

Thanks to the Community Fair Trade partnership, the Teddy Trust school was opened in 1994. The graduates now have the opportunity to follow aspiring careers including medicine and IT. Over 700 pupils attend the school including 50 children with learning disabilities. It’s the only school in Tamil Nadu to integrate children with special needs into mainstream education. This year, TBS will be helping Teddy Exports to build a Special Needs School for children with learning and physical disabilities. This new dedicated school will provide even more marginalized children access to much-needed support and education.

The Body Shop making a difference in Northen India with Tara Project

This Christmas – Help build a new, flexible education centre for over 150 children of the suppliers of one of TBS’s key accessories suppliers.

Tara Projects are an alternative trade organisation that supports numerous artisanal groups across Northern India. The Body Shop was Tara’s first major international customer to help them to gain experience of working with major overseas customers. Tara Projects supplies TBS Home Fragrance Soapstone Oil Burners since 1996. Tara pays fair wages, on time, and with regular orders provided to the producer groups each organization is able to earn a regular income and avoid exploitation by middlemen. This year, TBS will be helping Tara Projects to build a new learning centre in Agra to support the education of 150 children. The learning centre will offer flexible education for children who, due to their families’ economic circumstances often have to work to support their families.

The Body Shop making a difference in Honduras  with Poligono Foundation

This Christmas – Give children of TBS Community Fair Trade loofah suppliers in Honduras a school at their doorstep

Poligono has a small manufacturing unit in western Honduras located in Santa Rosa de Copan. It was founded in 1993 to provide professional, technical and social training to young people from low-income families. TBS has been trading with Poligono since 1997 to provide the finest quality loofahs and loofah products. By making and exporting Loofah products to The Body Shop, vital employment opportunities have been created. This year, TBS aims to help build a new school for the children of 38 families in San Jose de la Llorona, Jigua, Copan, Honduras. There is currently no primary school in the village, and the children have to walk 5km each day to go to school.

2

The Body Shop making a difference in Ghana with Kuapa Kokoo

This Christmas – A new school for the children of the suppliers of TBS’s luxurious cocoa butter.

Since 1996, TBS has been buying cocoa beans from the Kuapa Kokoo Company in southern Ghana, a fair trade cooperative with over 78,000 small-scale farmers, to make gloriously rich cocoa butter found in many products including the Seasonal Special Edition Body Butters.

This year, TBS will be helping to build a new Junior High School, with 3 classroom blocks,in the village of Betenase in the Sefwi Wiawso District of the Western Region of Ghana. Currently the 120 children in the community have to walk a long way to the nearest school. The money made by the cooperative helps provide schools and village wells, in addition to a fair income, helping to build confidence and providing the community with a higher standard of living.
