Singapore is located near the equator so the weather would be hot and sunny most of the time. Even when indoors, Fluorescent lamps / computer screen will emit a small amount of UV light too. Hence, it is important to safeguard yourself against harmful UV rays. We have sun protection for our skin, body, lips and hair… We can keep ourselves hydrated and ‘safeguard’ our well-being under the hot sun with beverages and ice cream. But often many will neglect the fact that our eyes needs UV protection. Just like what Rilakkuma is doing under the hot sun – slapping on sunblock for his face and body while keeping himself refresh with ice cream.. However, he is not protecting his eyes from the harmful UV rays and over-time it will lead to many eye issues.
As a form of eye protection, many would argue that dark tinted sunglasses would ‘filter’ UV rays from the scoring sun better. This misconception has been confirmed by a recent online survey conducted among 750 Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents aged 18 years old and above by Essilor*, the world’s leading provider of ophthalmic lenses.
*Essilor designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of lenses to improve and protect eyesight. Essilor’s flagship brands are Varilux®, Crizal®, Xperio® and Optifog™. It also develops and markets equipment, instruments and services for eyecare professionals.
The survey also revealed that nearly half (48%) of the respondents falsely believed that UV rays only come directly from the sun. They are unaware that UV rays are also reflected off surfaces, causing damage to the eyes. In addition, 87 % of the respondents have the wrong perception that sunglasses are the most important form of protection during summer or when the sun is prevalent. 37% of the respondents are also unaware that they can suffer damage from UV rays when they are indoors. A separate research shows that 40% of the UV rays can reach the eyes even when not in full sunlight, and UV is present not just in sun rays but in other forms of light too.
Dark tinted sunglasses do not necessarily block out UV rays better than light tinted lenses. Yet more than half (52%) of the respondents did not get the correct answer in the recent online survey. Hence, many in Singapore are unaware of proper eye protection against UV rays. With constant exposure to the UV rays from the sun, our eyesight can be severely damaged. Invisible to our naked eyes, the effects are cumulative and could result in major vision problems, including cataract and macular degeneration, and may even lead to eye cancer and vision loss.
Contrary to belief that sunglasses are the most important eyewear for UV protection, it is just as important to protect your eyes with proper UV protected clear lenses.
Therefore, to change our mindsets and to make consumers start to be consciously aware of UV protection for the ‘windows to the world’; Essilor has the CRIZAL UV lenses to provide highest front UV blockage and back UV reflective protection (in addition to fighting against the 5 enemies of vision – reflections, scratches, smudges, water drops and dust).
This breakthrough in corrective vision care with front and back surface UV protection ensures 360 protection that filters UV exposure away from your eyes. The lenses are also equipped with E-SPF 25, meaning that the wearer is 25 times more protected against UV than without any lens. In addition, Crizal UV also features improved scratch resistance of the lenses (With SR booster) which further enhances the clarity of vision.
Low awareness of proper eye protection against UV rays is of great concern, said Mr Peter Tan, Managing Director, Essilor Singapore. “Unlike a sunburn, eye damage caused by UV rays often goes undetected over prolonged periods. The impact may be less obvious initially, but the consequences are serious and irreversible.
Most anti-reflective eye-wear lenses in the market are able to block harmful UV light ONLY from the front so wearer might think that their eyes are fully protected from direct frontal UV transmission. However, the truth is that the greatest remaining UV danger comes from back UV reflection.
UV reflection occurs when the concave rear surface of anti-reflective lenses acts like a collector in a reflecting telescope, focusing UV rays directly upon the cornea and inner structures of the eye. Because many of us are caught unaware of this threat, back UV reflection is particularly dangerous as it is invisible… Invisible in the sense that visual ability is not immediately affected by this back reflection and therefore there are no discomfort. As a result, there are no natural defenses to UV such as pupil contraction and squinting thus misleading wearers into thinking that no harm is inflicted.
The Crizal UV coating will greatly reduce both visible front UV exposure and back UV reflection, providing full 360-degree protection for both the front and the back of its lenses. Crizal UV lenses also come equipped with Eye-Sun Protection Factor (E-SPF) 25, which means that the wearer will be 25 times more protected against UV than without any lenses. When bench-marked against other lenses in the market, Crizal UV lenses wins hands down by providing more protection.
As the general public is used to seeing UV protection index on skincare and bodycare products; by creating an E-SPF index (Eye-Sun Protection Factor) linked to Crizal UV helps increasing awareness of the importance to protect the eyes as well. Eye-Sun Protection Factor is a new protection index developed by Essilor certifying the global UV protection of a lens, to help consumer choose the right ultraviolet protection for the eyes. This evaluation system provides an impartial laboratory index for eye-wear, certifying the global UV protection of a lens. With E-SPF=25, your eyes are 25 times better protected than without any lenses (E-SPF excludes direct eye exposure from around the lenses).
Crizal UV guarantee the best E-SPF on the market for clear and Transition lenses when compared to other clear lenses with anti-reflective coating and equivalent material (Values vary from 2 to a maximum of 25 for clear lenses and go up to 50+ for sun lenses). The higher the E-SPF, the better the UV protection on both sides of the lens. With an E-SPF of 25, Crizal UV lenses are the only ones to reach the best level of protection in the clear lens category (meaning the wearer is 25 times more protected against UV than without any lens).

Thanks to Essilor Singapore, i had the chance to review the CRIZAL UV lenses and i have just collected my spectacles from Capitol Optical. Went to the Raffles City outlet and Jennifer was the one serving me.. She’s really knowledgeable and i have acquired a lot of eyes-related knowledge from her. Have chosen a nice spectacle frame from the Rayban signature Wayfarer collection (Green is the new released color!) The spectacle is now 3 days old and here’s my short review.
Few years back when i did eye check, there was some abnormalities detected (at the back of my eyes, the ‘cup’ in my appears to be too large for my age) so i was told to keep this in close monitoring as it might eventually lead to Blindness!! Hence, i will make sure that i took extra care of my eyes to prevent further complication. I’m glad that Crizal UV lens is able to reflect away UV rays (both front and back) that would cause further damage to the eyes. Did not request for transition coating this time as i want to put the UV lens to the test! In general, i felt that my vision is clearer, brighter and i felt more secured knowing that my eyes are more well protected. 🙂
Tested this element previously when i got my first pair of Crizal lenses. From the picture below, you can see that Crizal lens is non-reflective and you cannot see my reflection on it. It is important to invest in a non-reflective lens as it helps to reduce reflections and ‘ghostly’ images due to artificial lights. It also helps to reduce glares and dizziness from prolonged stating at computer screens thus enhancing comfort. Non-reflective lenses will also provide users with better views and judgement with enhanced visual performance for activities like night driving, sports and outdoor events.
Obviously i won’t be testing this on my new spectacles so i will be doing a comparison with my old spectacles (one with 5 yrs old normal lens and the other with 3.5 years old Crizal lens). Due to smudges, water stain and dust, i have to constantly wipe these two lenses. With the friction overtime, scratches started to form on my 5 years old normal lens. Whereas for the Crizal lens, i did not detect scratches although i did not really take good care of this pair of spectacle.. LOL!
I always have a problem with smudges on my lens due to my fringe when i wear my spectacle with normal lens. When i wore my new spectacles with the Crizal UV lens, i did not experience much smudges on the lens even though my fringe is practically sweeping it (all the time). The in-built smudge-repellent feature is really awesome as it prevents oily smudges or dirty marks which hinder vision.
Crizal lenses also helps prevent dust accumulation due to its anti-static properties. In a previous experiment, normal lens attracts more styrofoam balls as compared to Crizal lens. Therefore, Crizal lenses users will have clear vision all day long (even in a dusty environment). Users also need not wash and clean their spectacles as often to get rid of dust particles.
Due to Crizal lenses’ water-repellent properties, it prevents water from staying and spreading across the lenses. This is why when i submerged both spectacles and took it out, there’s lesser water droplets on the Crizal UV lens. Moreover, it is much easily to clean the droplets on my Crizal lens as compared to the normal lens (there will always be water stain left behind). Now i need to worry about rainy day’s blurred vision and vaporization!) 🙂
