DIY Gelish at the comfort of your home with Depend’s GelLack system!

Hello Everyone, just came back from my 2 weeks vacation and i’m trying to get my blogging mojo back! LOL! Been eating and relaxing way too much that i’m feeling so lazy! Back to work tmr and i’m really dragging it (The amount of backlog! Arggh!)

Anyway, i did not have time to do my nails in Singapore before my trip as i had decided to go to Korea at the very last-minute but thank God for Depend’s GelLack system (which i packed it in my luggage)! With this kit, i don’t have to go out with ugly nails and it is so easy to use at the comfort of my own home (or rather the hotel in this case!).

Depend’s GelLack system is an in-home salon quality gel nail system from Sweden. It consists Depend GelLack Obligatory Start Kit, Depend GelLack Colour and Depend GelLack Remover Oil. Having already taken Europe by storm, this new generation of nail polish and remover is set to make waves in Singapore. The Depend GelLack system is an easy and inexpensive way to achieve salon-perfect talons right at home. Easier to apply and longer lasting than regular nail polish, its unique removal process ensures a fuss-free and healthier nail experience.

Gelish Nails? As easy as 1,2,3!

As much as i want my nails to look pretty, maintaining the condition of my nails is as important as well! Normally, i will tend to avoid doing traditional gelish at Salon as i dislike the ‘buffing process’. If you have done Gelish Nails before, you should know that the manicurist will have to buff the surface of your nails before application of the gelish polish. This process will lead to nails surface becoming rough while it also causes thinning and brittleness of nails. Removal of traditional gelish is also very damaging as it typically include a nail wrap and a soak-off with pure acetone, which is drying to nails and skin. After which, the gel will need to be buffed off which causes damaged and thinning nails.

Besides being convenient, the main advantage of the GelLack System is that it doesn’t require buffing, as curing the polish under the LED lamp smoothens it out to achieve a shiny, ridgeless look. Since it is equipped with an LED lamp and not a UV lamp, the curing and drying process is quicker (30 seconds) and kinder to the nails.

The GelLack Obligatory Start Kit includes a before/after cleanser, base coat, top coat, an orange wood cuticle stick, filing board and an LED lamp; to be used with GelLack colour (sold separately), for a high-shine finish that will last two to three weeks. There’s also the GelLack Remover Oil (sold separately) which removes the gelish polish without damaging the nails and skin~

The GelLack Colour range is also pretty extensive and it currently has 30 beautiful shades (and growing) for nail polish aficionados to choose from. Each Depend GelLack Colour costs S$13.50 each which is affordable so you can change your nail colors often to match different outfit and occasions~ This is another plus point for gelish lovers as you need not sport the same old nail colors for 3 weeks to 1 month before doing another gelish manicure. If there is an event in which your current gel nails don’t match your outfit, you can paint them over with regular nail polish and remove it afterwards with acetone – the gel nails will not be affected 😉

Have tried the Depend’s GelLack system upon touched down in Korea (I was too tired to shop as i hardly slept on the plane). It is recommended that you read the instructions on the box and the booklet carefully before working on your nails. As a rule of thumb, make sure that there is no wound on your nail bed and that your nails are not too short (as all gelish polish are not supposed to touch the surface of the skin) before using the GelLack System. Lay out the different products in front of you (in according to sequence) and your DIY gelish manicure can commerce!

Here’s my step by step guide and hope it will be beneficial to you! 🙂

Step 1: If you have any existing nail polish on your nails, remove it first before apply Depend GelLack Before/After Cleanser on a cotton wool ball /pad and clean your nails carefully. Allow the nails surface to dry for about 30 seconds. The Depend GelLack Before/After Cleanser reminds me of a nail polish remover but minus the smell (My nose will thank me for that!)!!

Step 2: Apply a thin layer of Depend GelLack base on clean nails surface.. The texture of the base is like regular nail polish so it is really easy to apply it evenly on nails. The brush also allows precise application and in less than 3 mins, i’m done.. Harden the base for 30 seconds under the LED lamp . There’s a timer on the lamp itself do you need not keep track of time. The LED lamp is easy to use and it both strengthens and dries the nails within minutes, leaving an extremely durable surface.Once the lamp goes off, it is safe to touch your nails and clean the nail surface again with the cleanser before Step 3.

Step 3: Apply a thin coat of Depend GelLack colour and harden for 30 seconds under the LED lamp. I find it easier to harden the nail on my thumb last as i don’t have to squeeze 5 fingers inside and risk ruining my freshly applied polish ( i have fat fingers! haha). Once done, apply another thin layer of Depend GelLack colour and harden for 30 seconds under the LED lamp. Like the base, the GelLack color has the right consistency (not too thick and not too watery) which allows me to apply it smoothly. The brush also picks up the right amount of polish so you won’t end up with thick and uneven layer. Moreover, what’s cool about the system is that the base, color and top coat will levels out on its own upon curing under the LED lamp to achieve a smooth, ridgeless look! Clean the nail surface again with the cleanser before Step 4.

Step 4: Apply a thin layer of Depend GelLack TOP and harden for 30 seconds under the LED lamp. The surface of the nail will still be slightly sticky. Apply Depend GelLack Before/After Cleanser on a cotton wool ball and clean the top finish to bring out the gorgeous sheen of the GelLack. Once you have completed Step 1-4, you will  have a durable, high-gloss polish that will last for 2 – 3 weeks.

The removal process is the key highlight of GelLack’s system, as it requires only GelLack’s Remover Oil and warm water. Most (if not all) gel nail removal requires an acetone soak, which dehydrates the nails. The remaining polish is literally scraped and buffed off, which usually leads to damaged, brittle nails. However, GelLack only requires you to massage the oil into the nails, after which you place the nails in warm water (about 40+ degrees) for about 5 – 10 minutes and the nail polish can be peeled off with your fingers or with a cuticle stick, causing little to no damage to the surface. Depend GelLack Removal Oil retails at S$ 6.90 each.

I have not tried removing the nail polish but i have found a video which shows the easy removal process. However, it is in Cantonese and the summary of the removal steps are as follows:

Step 1: Massage GelLack Removal Oil onto the nails.
Step 2: Dip your nails into warm water that is about 40°C.
Step 3: Take an orange stick or simply use your nails to peel off the nail polish.

Overall Verdict:

All you need is 20 mins and you can get a ‘less invasive’ gelish manicure done at the comfort of your home. I’m not very good with the application of nail polish but i managed to achieve a set of nice gelish nails with the GelLack system. Hence you can decide for yourself how user-friendly the GelLack system is! Without filing the nail surface and soak-off with pure acetone, you will not risk harming your nails and skin. With GelLack, nails are protected and the natural nail quality is improved which promotes the growth of strong and thick nails. The system will also ensure that you can achieve long-lasting and smooth application. Will highly recommend this and it is certainly worth the $$! It is also recently launched in Hong Kong with great success, Hong Kong celebrities and celebrity stylists such as Mandy Wong and Linda Chung have all given their stamp of approval.

Whether you are trying to save money or are simply too busy to make an extra stop at the salon, it is
the perfect tool to master manicures and pedicures in the comfort of your own home.
