Say No to Stretch Marks with Bio-Oil!

Hello everyone! Today i will be touching on Stretch marks! Something which i was trying very hard to prevent during pregnancy by religiously applying anti-stretch marks oil ! During pregnancy, the skin on my belly had stayed stretch marks free but it made its appearance 2 weeks after delivery.  Till date, i have learnt to embrace my battle scars and just wear them like a badge of motherhood. I also know that the stretch marks will fade in time if i do something about it (Remember, there’s no ugly women, only lazy ones!)

Do you know that stretch marks are formed when skin elastic and collagen fibers network are disturbed.  Skin suppleness is guaranteed by a network of elastic and collagen fibers. During puberty, weight fluctuations and pregnancy, skin stretching and hormonal changes weakens skin and causes these fibers to break. This is when lines on the skin appear, known as stretch marks.

Stretch marks are more common in female than male. For Female, they can be found on the Thighs, Hips, Buttocks & Breasts. While for the Male, they can be found on the Shoulders , Thighs & Lower back. For bodybuilder, their shoulders and upper arms are at risk! During or after pregnancy, they can also be found on the Abdomen, Breasts, Thighs, Hips, Lower back & Buttocks. Early stretch marks will appear pink in color and may also be itchy. The skin immediately around the stretch marks may look flattened and thin. Gradually the stretch marks will enlarge in length and width, and changes it color to reddish or purple. Once stretch marks have matured, they will start to fade and become pale white or silver. They will also appear slightly depressed and irregular in shape or length

Although i have came to terms with my battle scars, i’m still on the lookout for products which will improve the situation. Months ago, Melodie from Access Coms has sent me a large-sized Bio-Oil and i can put them to good use! As you know, Bio-Oil helps to improve the appearance of all new / old scar types (from surgery, accidents burns, insect bites, scratches or conditions such as chicken pox). If you are having stretch marks like me, Bio-Oil also helps to improve the appearance. Containing breakthrough ingredients PurCellin Oil, Vitamins A & E, Calendula, Lavender, Rosemary and Chamomile Oil, this multi purpose oil can also be used to improve the appearance of pigmentation marks and blemishes. No wonder it is the No.1 Selling Scar and Scar Mark Product in 18 countries.

Originated and manufactured in South Africa, this Bio-Oil was launched in 1987 and has grown to become the global leader in this segment over the last 28 years. Globally, Bio-Oil has won more than 222 skincare awards, as well as becoming the No.1 selling scar and stretch mark product in 18 countries, including Singapore. Bio-Oil is the product most recommended by doctors and pharmacists around the world for scars and stretch marks issues. Bio-Oil is also highly effective for numerous other skin concerns including ageing, dehydrated skin. Based on Nielsen’s data, Bio Oil is the No 1 Selling in Singapore in 2012 and 2013.

This multi purpose oil is clinically researched to be effective and safe for face and body. If you are concerned that it is too heavy / rich to apply it on your face, not to worry! Bio-Oil is also suitable for sensitive skin and has been independently tested and proven to be non comedogenic, which means it will not cause acne or spots. Even though Bio-Oil is an oil, it is known as dry oil which means it is rapidly absorbed into skin without leaving a greasy residue, this will not cause breakout.

In a recent clinical study, 86% percent of subjects in a clinical trial noticed an improvement in their uneven skin tone and 71% for mottled pigmentation on the face after using Bio-Oil in just 12 weeks (Stephens & Associates 2011). Bio-Oil supplements the skin’s natural oily layer and is also a treatment to help restore the skin’s barrier function to retain moisture.

Bio Oil successfully combines the well documented benefits of two important skincare disciplines – Natural plant oils, used for centuries to enhance the skin’s condition + vitamins to promote healthy skin. What is unique to Bio-Oil is the Purecellion oil (a breakthrough ingredient) which reduces the consistency of Bio Oil, making it a light and easily absorbed dry oil that rapidly absorbed into the skin without leaving an oily residue. Bio Oil also contains formulation of Vitamins A and E, moisturising natural plant oils  – Lavender, Calendula, Rosemary and Chamomile to feed your skin with what it needs!

Bio Oil is highly effective for numerous other skin concerns including ageing and dehydrated skin. Numerous clinical trials and skin test studies were conducted on Bio-Oil which confirms on its efficacy on scars, stretch marks, uneven skintone and many more.

Have tried the Bio-Oil on my belly for about 1 month + to help to improve appearance of the existing stretch marks. For Mummy to be, i would highly recommend that you use it regularly which can greatly help reduce the risk of new stretch marks forming. By having preventive measures early, Bio-Oil can help prevent and works more effectively on newer stretch marks. If you are wondering if Bio-Oil is safe to use during pregnancy, it is absolutely safe to use throughout pregnancy and in fact one of its primary use is to prevent the development of stretch marks in pregnancy. By way of interest, Bio Oil has been assessed on per ingredient basis by experts to determine its safety profile. It has been used by pregnant women for over 20 years and is recommended worldwide by gynecologists and midwives.

Having tried it for the past 30+ days, here’s my review till date. It is said that for best results, you have to use it twice daily (massage onto skin in a circular motion) for at least 3 months.. As compared to the previous anti stretch marks oil that i was using, Bio-Oil’s texture is not as heavy and greasy (Yay to that!).. When i was using my previous stretch marks oil, I had ruined a few pajamas as the oil stained it!

I love the fact that Bio-Oil isn’t so greasy. Texture wise, it is slightly lighter as compared to the consistency of vegetable oil. Bio-Oil also sinks into my skin faster but like all oil, it doesn’t penetrate into skin instantly. Hence, you have to give it sometime to settle in before you wear your clothes over (to prevent stains). Bio-Oil also smells better as compared to my previous stretch marks prevention oil. I’m not sure if i’m more sensitive to smell when i was pregnant but it was overwhelming. As for the Bio-Oil, it has a mild herbal mixed with a little floral scent. Quite soothing actually!

Like all anti-stretch marks cream / oil, it will work better if you used it as a form of prevention as compared to using them on mature stretch marks. My stretch marks have already turned into white / silver colors so i’m only expecting Bio-Oil to improve the appearance of it. 1 month+ into using it, i observed that the stretch mark has reduced in color and becoming more ‘leveled’. While using the Bio-Oil, i also observed that the skin on my belly don’t itch as much as before. Will repurchase it when i’m expecting #2 and will let you know how it fares eventually.. 🙂
